LAMZANG, ZOGAM — September 14, 2026 — Baptist pastor Rev. Dal Thawn Tuang was shot dead on Sunday afternoon while returning from Tuitawh village, according to reliable local sources.
Pastor Dal Thawn Tuang had reportedly traveled to Tuitawh to provide assistance and was returning toward Lamzang through the Kaptel-area route at around 4:00 p.m. when he was attacked.
Reliable local sources identified PDF Zoland as responsible for the shooting. Another person traveling with the pastor, reportedly his elder brother, was wounded.
The killing came amid heightened tensions following the reported loss of approximately 80 SAC soldiers who had previously been under PDF Zoland’s custody. Local sources believe the attack may have been retaliatory, although the precise motive for targeting Rev. Dal Thawn Tuang remains unclear.
His body was later brought back toward Lamzang, where local community members received it. Funeral arrangements indicate that burial is scheduled for September 16 at 2:00 p.m.
The case has also renewed attention to an earlier death involving Pu Thang Khan Dal, a 70-year-old Zomi civilian who died after being detained by PDF Zoland in May, 2026.
PDF Zoland later attributed Pu Thang Khan Dal’s death to underlying illnesses, including diabetes, high blood pressure and a brain hemorrhage. Family members and local witnesses, however, said his body was returned with extensive bruising, swelling, cuts and other injuries that appeared inconsistent with that explanation. Witnesses also alleged severe injuries to his mouth and teeth. No independent forensic investigation was publicly released.
The killing of Rev. Dal Thawn Tuang has intensified concerns over the safety of civilians, religious leaders and community workers in conflict-affected areas.
